A 19-year-old NEET aspirant from Madhya Pradesh has recently captured national attention after doing something almost unheard of—he argued his own case in the Supreme Court and won an MBBS seat. The student, Atharva Chaturvedi, had cleared the NEET exam not once but twice and scored around 530 marks, yet he was denied admission under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota due to a policy gap in the state.
Despite qualifying on merit, his dream of becoming a doctor was stuck because Madhya Pradesh had not properly implemented EWS reservation in private medical colleges. Instead of giving up, Atharva decided to fight for his right. What makes his story extraordinary is that he did not rely on senior lawyers—he prepared and presented his case himself. That is why he chose to file his petition online and represent himself virtually. During the COVID period, he had observed court proceedings online, which helped him understand how arguments are presented. This self-learning played a crucial role in his success.
