If you’ve been around NEET preparation for even a year, you’ve probably heard this line again and again:
“Bhai cutoff phir badh gaya…”
And honestly, it’s not just something people say out of frustration. It’s actually happening.
Every year, after results come out from the National Testing Agency (NTA), you’ll see students shocked. Someone scoring what used to be a “safe score” a few years ago… and still not getting a government seat.
So what’s going on?
Is the exam getting easier?
Are students getting smarter?
Or is something else happening behind the scenes?
Let’s talk about it properly, without overcomplicating things.
First Reality – The Number of Students Has Exploded
This is the biggest reason. No overthinking needed here.
Earlier, the number of NEET aspirants was high… but now it’s on another level.
Every year, lakhs of new students are added. And not just casual candidates — serious ones.
But the number of seats? That’s not increasing at the same speed.
So imagine this:
More people → same level of seats → tougher competition
It’s like 100 people fighting for 10 seats vs 10,000 people fighting for those same 10 seats.
Obviously, the marks required to stay in the top group will go up.
Second Thing – Preparation Level Has Changed
A few years back, access was a problem.
If you didn’t have good coaching, you were already at a disadvantage.
Now? Completely different story.
You open YouTube — full lectures.
Telegram — notes everywhere.
Test series — online, offline, whatever you want.
Even students in small towns are now studying from top-level material.
So what changed?
Earlier, only a few students were well-prepared.
Now, a large group is well-prepared.
That’s a huge difference.
Third – Paper Is More “Expected” Now
Not saying NEET is easy. It’s still tough.
But one thing is true — students now understand the pattern better.
Especially in Biology, many questions come straight or indirectly from NCERT.
So if someone studies properly, they can actually score very high.
Earlier, scoring 600+ felt rare.
Now, many students are touching that range.
And when more students score high, cutoff automatically shifts upward.
Fourth – Drop Year Culture
This is something people underestimate.
A lot of students are not clearing NEET in the first attempt. So they take a drop.
Then another. Sometimes even more.
Now think about this situation:
A fresh student vs someone who has already studied the full syllabus once (or twice)
Who has the advantage?
Obviously the repeater.
They already know:
- where they made mistakes
- which chapters are weak
- how to attempt the paper
So naturally, many droppers perform better. And that pushes the overall marks higher.
Fifth – Government Seats Are Still Limited
This part hurts, but it’s true.
Yes, new colleges are opening. Yes, seats are increasing slowly.
But the demand is way higher.
Most students want government colleges because fees are affordable.
Private colleges exist, but not everyone can pay those fees.
So lakhs of students target the same limited government seats.
That’s where the real competition is.
Sixth – Small Marks, Big Rank Difference
This is where things get frustrating.
You might think:
“Bas 10 number aur aa jate…”
But those 10 marks can change your rank by thousands.
Why?
Because many students are scoring in a very tight range.
So even a small difference becomes huge in ranking.
That’s why cutoff feels like it’s jumping suddenly, even when the marks difference is not massive.
Seventh – Pressure + Awareness
NEET is no longer just another exam.
Now it’s everywhere — social media, coaching ads, YouTube, relatives, family discussions.
Students are starting preparation earlier than before.
Class 9, 10 se hi log serious ho ja rahe hain.
More awareness means more serious competition.
And again… cutoff goes up.
So What Should You Take From This?
Simple thing.
Cutoff is increasing — yes.
Competition is getting tougher — also yes.
But this doesn’t mean selection is impossible.
It just means you can’t rely on “average preparation” anymore.
You need:
- clarity in concepts
- regular revision
- proper mock practice
Not random studying.
Final Thought (No Motivation, Just Truth)
Cutoff badh raha hai… aur aage bhi badhega.
But the real question is not:
“Cutoff kitna jayega?”
The real question is:
“Tum kitna score karne wale ho?”
Because cutoff tum control nahi kar sakte.
Preparation kar sakte ho.
And in NEET, that’s the only part that actually matters.
