NEET Exam Cheating Attempt: Student’s Elaborate Plan Ends in Police Custody

In a startling incident that has raised fresh concerns over exam security and student misconduct in high-stakes competitive examinations, an 18-year-old student from Achampet was caught attempting to use a highly unconventional and carefully planned method to cheat during a NEET-like examination. What initially appeared to be a routine exam day quickly turned into a dramatic episode involving deception, surveillance, and eventual police intervention.

According to preliminary reports, the student devised a multi-step plan that began well before the examination started. On Sunday morning, around 7:00 AM, while most candidates were still revising their final notes and mentally preparing for the test, the student allegedly scaled the outer boundary wall of the examination center located at Ragnanaguda ZPHS School in Adibatla. His objective was not to enter the exam hall early or prepare quietly, but to secretly place a mobile phone inside the school premises without being detected by security personnel.

The NEET examination, known for its strict security protocols, includes multiple layers of inspection such as frisking, surveillance, and restricted access to electronic devices. Despite these measures, the student reportedly managed to bypass early-morning vigilance and entered the premises stealthily. Once inside, he located a washroom area and identified a ventilator space where he could temporarily hide the mobile phone. The device was carefully concealed, with the intention of retrieving it later during the examination.

Security arrangements intensified as the exam time approached. By 11:00 AM, police teams and invigilators had already begun thorough checks across the center. Candidates were being closely monitored, and all possible hiding spots were under surveillance. However, the hidden phone remained undiscovered during this initial round of inspection. According to officials, the device had been placed in such a way that it avoided immediate detection, even under standard checking procedures.

The situation escalated inside the exam hall when the student, now seated for the examination, began executing the second phase of his plan. About halfway through the test, he reportedly complained of stomach pain and requested permission to use the restroom. Given that health complaints are not uncommon during long competitive exams, the invigilators allowed him to step out under supervision protocols.

The student was directed to the only common washroom located within a separate area of the school campus. However, what initially appeared to be a routine medical excuse soon aroused suspicion among the exam staff. The student took an unusually long time inside the washroom, significantly longer than what is typically required for a short break during an exam. This delay prompted the invigilation team to grow concerned about possible malpractice.

After waiting for an extended period, officials knocked on the washroom door. Receiving no immediate response and observing continued delay, they decided to intervene. When the door was finally opened under supervision, the student was discovered inside in possession of a mobile phone that had been hidden earlier.

Investigators later revealed that the device had been retrieved from a concealed location within the washroom’s flush tank, where it had been stored in a waterproof zip-lock cover. The student was allegedly found using the phone to search for answers online through applications such as Google Chrome and social media platforms like Instagram, attempting to obtain assistance during the examination.

The discovery immediately triggered a security alert at the center. Invigilators confiscated the mobile phone on the spot and informed higher authorities. The examination process in that room was halted temporarily as officials assessed the breach of protocol. The student was taken aside for questioning, and the matter was escalated to local law enforcement agencies.

Hyderabad City Police later confirmed that the mobile device was seized as evidence. The student was taken into custody for further investigation. Authorities stated that a formal complaint was lodged by the school administration, following which a criminal case was registered against the accused.

The charges reportedly include provisions under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with relevant sections of the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024. These laws are specifically designed to address malpractice and fraudulent activities in competitive and public examinations, and carry strict penalties for violations.

Officials emphasized that the incident reflects a growing challenge faced by examination authorities in maintaining fairness and integrity during large-scale tests like NEET. Despite advanced surveillance systems, metal detectors, and strict invigilation protocols, some candidates continue to attempt innovative and often risky methods to bypass the rules.

Education experts have also expressed concern over such incidents, stating that the pressure of competitive exams can sometimes push students toward unethical decisions. However, they also stressed that such actions not only jeopardize the student’s academic future but also undermine the credibility of the entire examination system.

The case has sparked discussions among educators, parents, and policymakers about the need for both stricter enforcement and better counseling for students appearing in high-pressure examinations. Many argue that while security measures must continue to evolve, equal attention should be given to reducing psychological stress and promoting ethical academic behavior.

At present, the accused student remains in police custody while further investigation is underway. Authorities are examining how the mobile phone was successfully smuggled into the examination center despite security arrangements and whether any additional individuals were involved or negligent during the process.

The incident serves as a cautionary tale highlighting both the ingenuity and consequences of attempting to bypass examination rules. What began as a carefully calculated plan ultimately ended in exposure, legal trouble, and disciplinary action, reinforcing the message that cheating methods, no matter how sophisticated, are likely to fail under scrutiny.
